Spiritual Benefits of Education
God wants us to educate our minds and increase our abilities so we can grow, become an influence for good in the world, and help build His kingdom. Doctrine and Covenants 130:18–19 teaches: “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life … he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.”
“You are never too young to learn, never too old to change. Your yearnings to learn and change come from a divinely instilled striving for eternal progression. Each day brings opportunity for decisions for eternity” (Russell M. Nelson, “Decisions for Eternity,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2013).
Here are some of the spiritual benefits of gaining an education:

  • Building Resilience
    Life’s trials require resilience. Education equips us with cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, emotional intelligence, and a sense of purpose. These qualities foster resilience, helping us bounce back from life’s challenges with strength and optimism.
  • Overcoming Thinking Errors
    Education challenges our assumptions and biases. It encourages critical thinking, helps us question things and learn truths, and teaches us to think carefully so we can correct any thinking errors we might have.
  • Developing Spiritual Skills
    Education cultivates essential spiritual attributes such as humility, compassion, and a desire to grow and change. Just as we learn to navigate the world around us, we can intentionally develop qualities that draw us closer to our Heavenly Father.
  • Sharing Knowledge
    Sharing knowledge helps others to learn and grow. As we teach others, we fulfill the command to “teach ye diligently” of heavenly truths (Doctrine and Covenants 88:78–80).
  • Serving Others
    Whether it is sharing our expertise, volunteering, or mentoring, educated individuals contribute positively to their communities. Education can enable us to serve others more effectively.
  • Becoming More like Heavenly Father
    Education is a spiritual endeavor. “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth” (Doctrine and Covenants 93:36). As we learn and apply true principles, we draw closer to our Heavenly Father and become more like Him. Learning provides a pathway to greater light and truth, enabling us to make better decisions, serve more effectively, and become an instrument in His hands.

Becoming a Lifelong Learner
Education is not limited to formal schooling; it encompasses lifelong learning and personal growth. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we can embrace education as a sacred responsibility, both for our temporal well-being and our eternal progression.
Elder Robert D. Hales taught: “Lifelong learning is essential to the vitality of the human mind, body, and soul. It enhances self-worth and self-actuation. Lifelong learning is invigorating mentally and is a great defense against aging, depression, and self-doubt” (“The Journey of Lifelong Learning” (Brigham Young University devotional address, Aug. 19, 2008).
Many Church leaders have talked about the importance of education in our lives. President Dallin H. Oaks stated, “Lifelong learning can increase our ability to appreciate and relish the workings and beauty of the world around us.” And President Gordon B. Hinckley shared his love of learning in “Continue in the Great Process of Learning.”
