NSO Sensory-Friendly Quiet Space

The BYU Statement on Belonging states, "We value and embrace the variety of individual characteristics, life experiences and cirumstances, perspectives, talents, and gifts of each member of the community and the richness and stength they bring to our community." With that in mind, we recognize that students will respond differently to the events planned for New Student Orientation. What for some students will be exciting and energizing, could be overwhelming or draining for others. We are creating a calm, low-stimulation environment during New Student Orientation, where students can go when they need a break from the noise.

Our sensory-friendly "chill spaces" will be held in the following times and locations:

  • Friday 8/28 in the Marriott Center Cougar Room from 10 am to noon.
  • Tuesday 9/1 in the Marriott Center Cougar Room from 11 am to noon.
  • Tuesday 9/1 in WSC 3250 from 1 pm to 3 pm.

The set up of the room will change slightly depending on the location, but each space will generally include dimmed lighting, reduced noise, a place to rest, reset, and decompress, and some sensory friendly activities. Feel free to come and go as needed and Welcome to BYU!
