Scott Goodwin

Director of Belonging Experiencial and Clinical Learning Initiatives

Growing up in Connecticut and Oregon, Scott served a proselyting mission in São Paulo, Brazil, where he developed a lifelong desire to put his soul into meaningful work. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from BYU and a master’s degree from Rice University, Scott taught high school English in Houston’s public school district. Watching that highly diverse student body build friendships across differences of nationality, language, and heritage was an experience that continues to inspire him.

After receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia, Scott practiced law in Delaware for 10 years before following an impression to come to BYU. While maintaining an appellate and Supreme Court litigation practice, he taught for 7 years at the J. Reuben Clark Law School with a focus on experiential learning. He founded and directed the BYU Criminal and Civil Rights Appeals Clinic, coached moot court, and taught evidence and criminal procedure. His students voted him the 2019 and 2021 Adjunct Professor of the Year, and in 2023 he received the Student Bar Association’s Distinguished Faculty Service Award.

Scott loves the Blue Ridge Mountains, runs a decent marathon, and sails sporadically. He and his wife have four children, including several BYU students.
